I have changed my name, what do I need to do?

You must let us know if you have changed your name.

There is not a charge for changing your name in the register.

Change of name by marriage or civil partnership

You can let us know by sending us:

  • a completed form AP1 (in panel 4 under ‘Applications in priority order’, write ‘Change of name’) or a covering letter, and
  • the original or an official copy of a marriage certificate or a civil partnership certificate, these will be returned to you.

We will keep a certified copy of a non-UK marriage certificate if no original is lodged with it.

Change of name by deed poll, statutory declaration or statement of truth 

You can let us know by sending us:

  • a completed form AP1 (in panel 4 under ‘Applications in priority order’, write ‘Change of name’) or a covering letter, and
  • the original or a certified copy of a deed poll, which we will return to you, or
  • the original statutory declaration, or 
  • an original statement of truth,

If you want the original statutory declaration or statement of truth to be returned, you must also send in a certified copy. If you only send in a certified copy we will keep it.

ID1 evidence may be in respect of either name but, if it is for the new name, we will also need copies of official documentation to establish a link to the person named in the register or deed. This might, for example, be a passport, driver's licence or utility bill that shows the former name.

There is no charge for a change of name.

Other changes

If you want to tell us about other changes, for example, you have also changed your address, you must send all the relevant papers to a particular Land Registry office depending on the location of your home address.
