How do I find out who owns a property or piece of land?

The land and/or property cannot be easily identified by a postal address

You can find out online or by post.

Online

You can try and search for land or property using the 'Map enquiry' link in our online service Find a property. Enter as much detail of the land or property address as you can and you will then be taken to the 'Aerial land locator'. Follow the instructions on the screen to identify the land/property you are interested in. You will need to scroll down the screen to see the list of any registered properties.

For further information see the 'Aerial land locator – hints and tips' on the left hand menu in Find a property.

Note 1: Once you have selected 'purchase' you will be asked to register your details before proceeding.

If you find the land or property, you will be able to  and download an electronic copy of its title register which gives  details of the current registered owner(s). This costs £3 for the title register and £3 for a title plan, which you can pay by major credit or debit card.

For further information about this service see 'About this service' and 'Costs and payment' in the left hand menu of Find a property.

Note 2: The register you download will not be an 'official copy' so cannot be used as evidence in a court. To get 'official copies' see 'How can I get a copy of the title register and/or title plan?'

Note 3: If the search gives a 'no information available' result it does not necessarily mean that the land or property is not registered. It may be registered, but is simply not available on line.  If this happens you will not be charged a fee.

To make certain wether the land orproperty is registered or not you can ask us to make a search, called a 'search of the index map', using form SIM.

For further information about this service see 'Solving problems' in the left hand menu of Find a property or By post below.

By post

To get details of the owners of the land or property you first have to find out if the land or property is registered with us. You can do this by asking us to carry out a search called a 'Search of the Index Map'.
